The simulated contamination is a harmless spray that can be applied to clothing, equipment and surfaces where it slowly evaporates. The gas cloud stays within 2 cm of the surface. Within this range, the detector response will vary between 2000 cps at contact, to background at 2 cm. The detector response becomes realistic when a probe is moved over the surface, quickly giving a short response and slowly giving a longer response.

The usage time after applied spray depends on several things, time, the temperature and the roughness of the surface. For example, a cold concrete floor will respond for 8 hours, while the spray evaporates within an hour on a warm fabric. After 24 hours, everything is guaranteed to have evaporated.

The liquid is sticky and can simulate the transfer of contamination. It is also possible to train decontamination with wiping or washing.
