Germanium detector is designed specifically for the detection of internal contamination of actinides, especially uranium, plutonium and americium. Due to the low yield of uranium and the low energy of the X-rays from plutonium, the application requires a highly specialized detector system. To achieve high sensitivity, two large BEGe detectors are placed virtually in direct contact with the subject in close proximity to the lungs. The measurements must be performed in a room shielded from background radiation and for optimal results the detectors must be closely spaced, the detector’s own background must be low, the resolution must be good and the sensitivity of the detector must be high for the energy range of interest (13-20 keV for Pu, 60 keV for Am and 140-190 keV for U).
