BeOSL – dosimetry system

A BeOSL (Beryllium Oxide Optically Stimulated Luminescence) dosimetry system used for personal and environmental dosimetry. When beryllium oxide is irradiated, electrons are trapped in the defects of the crystal lattice and store energy proportional to the radiation dose. When reading, the detector is illuminated with light of a specific wavelength, which releases the trapped electrons so that they return to the ground state and emit light (luminescence). The amount of light emitted is measured and converted to an absorbed dose.
BeOSL has higher tissue equivalence, which provides more accurate doses in relation to biological tissue, and a broader energy response with good sensitivity even to low-energy radiation than traditional OSL. In addition BeO has a higher radiation hardness and can be reused many times without significant degradation.
